Remembering God's Faithfulness
Series: Worship that Remembers Title: Remembering God’s Faithfulness Reading: Malachi 2:10-16 Our passage begins with a simple reason to treat one another well: ‘Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?’ Yet here we have a description of the people of God making a covenant through marriage with ‘a foreign God’. Such marriages may have been considered a strategic alliance at the time and simply good political practice. Malachi, however, sees this as a breaking of the covenant, or faithful promise with God. Is it any wonder Malachi goes on to rebuke those who reject the ‘wife of your youth’? It brings tears, heartache, and seems to impact the offspring of the marriage. Such a lack of faithfulness is ultimately ‘violence’. Jesus summed up faithfulness (love) toward God and others as the core of the ‘law and prophets’. If we truly remember God’s faithfulness, we will also grow in faithfulness toward each other.
