The Birth of Jesus
Reading: Luke 2:1-7 Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus is preceded by the pilgrimage of Joseph and the very pregnant Mary to the tribal land of Joseph, the town of Bethlehem. It is, in many ways, a deliberately undignified story. Forced to travel in late pregnancy by Herod’s demand for a census, they arrive to find only the most rudimentary accomodation is possible. The king of heaven is, in fairly confronting fashion, born outside the usual living quarters and cradled in a feeding-trough. One would struggle to find a less dignified scene for the child-king. Yet, this story, as it unfolds has many moments where the call of the kingdom is heard most clearly by those without. What does this say about the humility of heaven? What does this say about those who are most likely to be open to the Gospel?
