Remembering God's Faithfulness
From Series: "Worship that Remembers P"
A journey through Malachi.
A message from the series "Worship that Remembers P." Reading: Malachi 2:1-9 In our passage for today, the call to remember centres on the covenant God made with Levi and his priestly descendants. It is summed up in verse 5 as a promise of ‘life and peace’ and ‘fear’ (or reverence). There is an echo here of the first passage we looked at in Malachi in the movement from ‘love’ to ‘honour’. Levi, according to this passage walked before God in integrity, ‘peace’, and ‘uprightness’. Now, however, his descendants lead the people of Israel in the opposite direction. Here is a call to remember the promises of God and worship from this place of assurance. In Jesus we have a ‘better covenant’ (see Hebrews 7:22). Surely this calls us to worship with an even greater integrity.

CloseSeries: Worship that Remembers Title: Remembering God’s Faithfulness Reading: Malachi 2:10-16 Our passage begins with a simple reason to treat one another well: ‘Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?’ Yet here we have a description of the people of God making a covenant through marriage with ‘a foreign God’. Such marriages may have been considered a strategic alliance at the time and simply good political practice. Malachi, however, sees this as a breaking of the covenant, or faithful promise with God. Is it any wonder Malachi goes on to rebuke those who reject the ‘wife of your youth’? It brings tears, heartache, and seems to impact the offspring of the marriage. Such a lack of faithfulness is ultimately ‘violence’. Jesus summed up faithfulness (love) toward God and others as the core of the ‘law and prophets’. If we truly remember God’s faithfulness, we will also grow in faithfulness toward each other.
