James Ramsay - July 5, 2020

The Training of a Servant

  • Watch

Elijah breaks onto the scene declaring judgement against one of the most vile kings of Israel, Ahab. And as quickly as he comes he disappears for three years. But he wasn’t just waiting, God was working in the life of Elijah. Through the trials of the dried brook, the empty vessel and the dead son, Elijah is transformed into a servant of God. God has been taking Elijah through a number of trials to make him stronger than ever in his faith in God.

An 8 part series working through the book of 1 Kings. 1 & 2 Kings forms one book but is split in two from the shear length of the book. It is an account of the kings of Israel which applies the Deuteronomic book of the law to how well the kings lived up to it. It is clear that 1 Kings is not just a history of the lives of the kings of Israel. It’s obvious choice and emphasis on certain events tells us that it takes a particular view of history and those events. We can presume that it takes the perspective of God as he watches his people and their kings and passes judgement on them. Lessons are to be learnt as God provides his evaluation of the lives of not only the kings but Israel and its prophets.
